Projection screens are a different story all together. There are no real specifications to begin with. Sure, you have gain and viewing angles, but since a projection screen can only reflect what the projector puts out, it's hard to compare. Especially when you add the impact of ambient light to the equation. (ambient light is all light that is not coming from the projector).

So how can you get the right projection screen for your HD projector?

First of all, you have to realize that there are no HD projection screens. There is no industry standard that determines which projection screen would or would not be high definition. Nor is that possible, because with an HD projector a projection screen would then be HD, but with a standard projector it would not be.

So now that we have determined that an HD projection screen does not exist, what do you look for when you want to have the most from your HD projector?

1. A wrinkle-free fabric. V-shapes and horizontal lines are common with some projection screens. But, this is a no-go for an HD set-up, since any distortion in a razor sharp image can be seen immediately. The best screen types are fixed frame screens and electric or tensioned electric projection screens. Manual screens are cheap, but rarely offer a level of planarity that results in a distortion-free projection.

2. A smooth fabric. Some fabrics are coarse in the sense that the projection layer sprayed onto the carrier material has a clear structure. This interferes with the projection, since with an HD projection, the structure will be visible. This is not only annoying, but takes the realism out of the movies you project.

If you look at these two factors, you are guaranteed to have a perfect projection screen. Don't believe HD or HD ready labels stuck onto a projection screen or displayed on a site.

And, if possible, visit a showroom where you can see the differences between fabrics and see how they perform. If that's no option, ask for fabric samples, as many manufacturers make these available, free of charge, so you can see what the material is like, without ever leaving your home.

So an HD projection screen is a fantasy, but you can get a screen that will make the most of your projector.

Organic LED (OLED) Soon to Dominate HDTV Market

Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology has been the star at the electronics trade shows this year. At this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, the biggest product introduction was made by Sony, with an OLED display. The new 11" Sony TV is called the "XEL-1". The Sony HDTV is extremely thin (less than 1/10") and light-weight. At the FPD International Show in Asia in November, Samsung introduced a 31" OLED HDTV with 1080P resolution and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

Companies like LG, Toshiba, Matsushita (Panasonic) are investing hundreds of millions of dollars, developing this promising technology. Toshiba plans to sell a 30" OLED display in 2009. Samsung says that they will sell large screen OLED sets in 2010.

Eastman-Kodak holds a several patents in OLED technology. Manufacturers will probably be required to pay a licensing fee to Kodak for every OLED TV sold. Eastman-Kodak just introduced the OLED Material EK-GD403, which utilizes green dopant technology. The technology advance is a stampede.

There is a lot of money to be made. According to DisplaySearch, in 2007, the market for LCD TVs was estimated at $27.4 billion, while the market for plasma TVs was estimated at $7.5 billion. An OLED TV that was cost competitive would likely get a significant share of this market. DisplaySearch estimates that the OLED market will grow to more than $17 billion annually by 2015. According to iSuppli, the current market for OLED devices is a little more than a half-billion dollars per year. Samsung currently has a 70% market share. But cost and technology problems have prevented OLED from being used in larger equipment such as HDTVs or computer monitors.

Easy Wall-Mountable HDTV

Most consumers say they want a wall mountable HDTV. However, according to the NPD Group, a consumer and retail market research information firm (NPD.com), only 13 percent of current LCD TV owners and 25 percent of plasma TV owners say their set is mounted on the wall.

"Consumers are drawn to flat-panel technologies for their wall-mounting capabilities, but the difficulty of such an installation often leads them to explore alternatives such as stands or retailer installations." said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis, The NPD Group. But with OLED, the job of mounting the hardware would be much easier, more like hanging a painting on the wall. The hardware weighs a fraction of LCD or plasma.

OLED Performance

OLED displays have already used for some time in digital cameras, cell phones and other devices with relatively small panels, because they are very energy efficient, which is very important in portable devices.

A significant benefit of OLED displays over traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is that OLEDs do not require a backlight to function. Because of this, they draw much less power. And because there is no backlight, an OLED display is much thinner than an LCD display.

And because there is no backlight, an OLED system has a larger viewing angle than an LED system, and an OLED display can be much thinner than an LCD display.

The response time for OLED is faster than normal LCD screens. An average of 8 to 12 milliseconds in response time is normal for a LCD compared to 0.01 milliseconds in response time for an OLED. This means that OLED will be less subject to "blur". Blur occurs when there is rapid motion in the programming, such as sports. When the picture changes quickly, the pixels can lag in response.

One of the problems that has limited OLED use was that the blue OLED technology had a short lifetime, but a new type of blue LED, the "PHOLED", has a 20,000-hour lifetime (20-25 years of normal TV use). This was a major breakthrough in the effort to commercialize this technology for the HDTV market.

In theory, OLED displays can be more efficiently manufactured than LCD or plasma displays, meaning that they should not be as expensive. The Sony XEL-1 sells for $2500, but you should remember that the first large LCD and Plasma displays were much more expensive when they were first introduced. If production costs can be cut, the OLED HDTV set should eventually be less expensive that comparable LCD sets.

• Response is better than LCD (good for fast moving images like Sports)

If the OLED does not live up to its promise, it will not be the first HDTV display to do so. Remember the surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED TV)? Toshiba and Canon were ready to go into production, but patent disputes with a company called Nano-Proprietary killed the technology. That probably won't happen this time. The main obstacle will be the manufacturing process. If units can be manufactured cost-competitively with LCD and Plasma, it should get very interesting.

How to Guide - Connecting Your Laptop to HDTV Or TV

I'm writing this guide after being asked a few times on ways to connect a laptop to a TV. People want to achieve this for several reasons. First, it's great for presentations at work, school, or home. It's also convenient for viewing pictures and videos to friends, watching DVDs, and it is now even being used for viewing Blu-ray and other high definition content on the HDTV.

First, we want to make sure you're getting the most out of your laptop when it comes to displaying it on the TV.

• If you have an HDTV with HDMI inputs, check if your laptop has an HDMI output. If it does, you're in luck! Your HDTV can display from your laptop in HD resolutions. All you need is an HDMI cable to connect them. If your HDTVs HDMI inputs are used up already. An HDMI switch would be the best solution for you. We supply switches that can connect up to 5 different HDMI sources to 1 HDMI input.
• If you don't have an HDMI output on the laptop, check if it has a DVI output. Some ASUS, and Dell laptops have them. If you do, you can connect your laptop to an HDTV with an HDMI to DVI cable. They are both digital cables so this will produce the same HD resolutions as a standard HDMI cable.
• If your laptop doesn't have HDMI or DVI out, it should have a VGA output. Connecting with VGA is capable of high resolutions. However, different TVs support different resolutions with VGA. You must check the maximum resolution your TV model supports with VGA.
• Pretty much all laptops come with an S-Video output. It's not going to be as great of a picture, but it will certainly do the job with an S-Video cable.

After you have connected your chosen cable, boot up your laptop and see if it has detected your TV. If not, you have to go into your display properties and look for the settings that will enable your TV to display from your laptop. Where to find the setting will vary depending on your graphics card (just look around). If you are having trouble getting your TV to show a picture, make sure you have updated the display drivers on your laptop. Now you're probably going to want sound from something other than your laptop speakers. So you can choose to output it to your TV, or blast it from your home theater audio receiver.

• The best way to connect audio to your TV or receiver is through a digital audio cable. Both a digital coaxial cable or Toslink optical audio cable will work great for crisp high quality audio. Just make sure your laptop has either a digital coaxial or an optical audio output. Some laptops use the headphone jack to double as a digital coaxial (S/PDIF) output. If you use this method, your going to need a 3.5mm to RCA adapter with a digital coaxial cable. If your laptop has none of these outputs and you still really want that high quality sound. Don't worry! You can still get an external (USB) sound card that has digital coaxial out or optical out. • Another way, which won't require any add-ons, is to use the headphone (3.5mm) jack on your laptop to the RCA (red and white) inputs on your TV or receiver. To do this, all you need is a 3.5mm to 2 RCA adapter with a 2 RCA audio cable.

Tea - Coffee - Rest - A Great Game For Your Music Lessons

You can easily brighten up your classroom Music Lesson with this simple game that children will ask for again and again! It's easy to set up, you can do it successfully with no musical equipment at all and it teaches rhythm and musical confidence while everyone has fun! Add it to your lesson plans!

Preparation:

Arrange chairs in a big circle. Set aside one chair for yourself. If you have enough drums for the whole class, put one in front of each chair. The children will be using their hands to play the drums. You, the teacher, should ideally have a cowbell and a beater.

If you don't have enough drums, you can alternate drums and other percussion instruments - such as tambourines, castanets etc - around the circle. You can get everyone to move around after each round of the game, so the instrument distribution will be fair. If you don't have any instruments at all, just clap the rhythms!

Begin by demonstrating the main rhythm: crotchet, two quavers, crotchet (quarter note, two eighth notes, quarter note). The time signature is .

Actually say "Tea, coffee, rest; tea, coffee, rest;" and get the whole class to repeat it several times. Then get them all to play the rhythm together on their instruments.

Next, substitute a "rest" for the third beat - in other words, the rhythm becomes crotchet, two quavers, crotchet rest (quarter note, two eighth notes, nothing). When they can all do this together, you'll be ready to start the game. Explain that everyone has to abide by your rules and that your decisions will be final.

How to play Tea Coffee rest - training version

Get the children to put down their instruments for this version. Start quite slowly. Count aloud "one, two, three" and look straight at the child who is to start, to eliminate any doubt. You keep the pulse going with your cowbell.

The first child says "tea" on the first beat, the second child says "coffee" on the second beat and the third child says nothing at all. The fourth child says "tea" and so on. Insist that "coffee" is two even quavers (eighth notes) in strict rhythm. Keep going round the circle until everyone understands.

How to play Tea Coffee rest - real live version

The children take up their drums and percussion. Explain that this time they will be playing the same tea, coffee, rest rhythm on their instruments, one at a time. If anyone makes a mistake they will be "out" and will have to sit on the floor, leaving their instrument on the chair.

Count "one, two, three" as before and keep the pulse going with your cowbell (yes, even on the rests). The first child strikes his/her drum once on the first beat, the second child plays two quavers (eighth notes), the third does nothing, the fourth child plays once, the fifth plays two quavers (eighth notes), the sixth does nothing, and so on round the circle.

Whenever anyone makes a mistake they are "out". They immediately put down their instrument (on the chair) and sit on the floor, without any argument! You restart with the same count-in, looking at the next child in the circle.

As the numbers of active players decreases, you can up the tempo. If you're left with three (or six) good players who don't make a mistake, just stop and restart (on a different child) quickly so that they are taken off guard. Or reverse the direction. When you're down to two players, even you will be confused!

You can help the children by looking earnestly at each player when it's their turn - or tease them by looking earnestly at another child so that they play at the wrong time.

Give the winner a Smartie or sticker or whatever currency they value, then get everyone to move around (by one chair) before sitting on the chairs again. Start again straight away and keep the pace up. Four rounds of the game are probably enough, even though the children would happily play it for hours. The next time you play you won't have to do any explaining.

A note of caution: this game will make you seriously popular, but the downside is that children may tell their parents that they just play games in their music lessons. Be prepared to defend the activity and explain how it teaches children to count in time, to come in independently, to listen and fit in with others, to perform in a group and to recognise note values!

Creating a model portfolio is a process

Ok, you're ready to create your portfolio. All you have to do is contact your local photographer, set up a photo session, have prints made and put them in a book, right? WRONG!!!
You want your model portfolio to be professional, complete, and impressive when you show it. This is one of the single most important steps you'll take other than promotion so get it right!

What is a model portfolio?

Your model portfolio book will be made up of a book with anywhere between 10 and 25 photos normally consisting of 9x12 prints.
You will want a good selection of different types of "looks" in your portfolio. For example; have some photos created indoors in a home setting, some in the studio, some outdoors in different locations.

Also include shots which may be considered commercial, fashion, casual, and editorial content. Ask the photographer to help you with choosing looks that best fit your personality and the type modeling you wish to pursue.

You'll also want to include a good headshot (without makeup) and a good body shot (swimwear or tight-fitting clothing) especially if you plan to apply to the larger model markets. These larger markets such as the top NY agencies like to see exactly what they are getting when they view your photos. They don't want to see fancy posing or clutter, just you so keep this in mind when creating model photos for them to view.

Do not think that "more is better". It's much more effective to have 8 absolutely beautiful, perfectly shot photos in your portfolio than 100 mediocre ones.

Now, let's get started in developing your model portfolio. A really good, complete model portfolio is not created overnight. You will develop it as you develop your talent by working with different photographers.

Different photographers? Won't this cost a fortune?

A terrific model portfolio won't cost you a fortune if you follow the simple steps below. Your model portfolio will not be free, mind you, but way less expensive than paying several different photographers to shoot each section.

Step One - Paid Photo Session

If you are working on a tight budget, this may be a little painful to you but worth it if you are trying to build a killer portfolio.

Finding a photographer for your first model session

Although your local portrait photographer may be teriffic in doing family portraits or weddings, he/she may not know all the ins and outs of creating a model portfolio. You may want to check to see if they offer this service but I would check places like One Model Place or Model Mayhem for photographers who are well experienced in portfolio work.

You should be able to hire a really good photographer for anywhere between $300. to $1,000. with the latter being the extreme in a high-end market area. I would think the average would be around $600.
When choosing your photographer, don't just base your decision on price. If the photographer can't produce those perfect images for your portfolio, it doesn't matter what it costs!

What you should ask the photographer

Below are some questions to ask your photographer before agreeing to hire him/her for the job of creating your model portfolio.

Ask if he is experienced in model portfolio development - Be sure to choose a photographer who is used to creating model portfolios so that there is less chance of confusion about what you need and desire in your portfolio

Ask where the photographer is located (This really seems silly but I have received hundreds of contacts from across the US just because models brought up my website when they did a search on photographers in their areas)

Ask for references of recent model shoots (contact at least two models)

Ask for the price range for portfolio packages, how many photos, etc.

Tell the photographer the type 0f model images you need and ask if she has the ability to create them

Ask who will provide the hair and makeup artist(s), you or the photographer. This varies greatly and I would suggest having these services no matter who provides them

Ask if he provides retouching or airbrushing services and whether this is included in the original fee given

Ask how the photos are delivered - This also depends on the photographer's way of doing business so is very important. For instance, we deliver all our images on cd but in printable and web formats so that the model can have copies made whenever she needs them. Also, this means she does not have to print every photo to get what she needs.

Ask about usage rights - This question relates to the previous one. It's very important that you receive usage and reprint rights for your promotions. If the photographer does not offer reprint rights, ask about usage of the prints. You may be able to work something out with him

Ask how long it takes to receive your images after the shoot. You don't want to wait for an eternity or until you are six months older before receiving your portfolio photos.

Ask about clothing and props - What should you furnish and does the photographer have any props and/or outfits on hand

Ask if she will assist you in your posing - Tell her that you are new and ask for posing suggestions

Ask if you can bring a friend or parent (If the photographer refuses this request, I would suggest looking for a different photographer)

Ask if the photographer will help in your promotion - Not the usual job of the photographer but some will. We offer an online comp card album online for six months with each model portfolio session.

Ask the photographer if she offers a guarantee. You should be well satisfied with your photos. After all, it's your model portfolio you will be showing to the world so you'll want it done right!

Do Not Buy Toddy Coffee Maker If You Want to Brew Any Coffee!

It is true, toddy coffee maker cannot brew you any coffee! Firstly, it was not designed to brew any coffee, and it is not meant to be a stove top coffee pot. Toddy is a special coffee brewer that can only do cold coffee!

And by cold coffee, I do not mean the type that goes cold after it have been left on the table for sometime. By cold coffee, I meant those that can serve chill something like cold lemonade.

Now, if you asked me who would want to drink cold coffee, that is really a matter of preference, but all I can say is that toddy cold brew has a huge following and is doing a roaring business in US.

The reason that they are not so popular in other part of the world is merely due to their marketing strategy. Currently, they are limiting their marketing effort to US. Even, on their website, they are only selling to US citizens.

From a marketing perspective, this is not a very savvy marketing plan as you are effectively limiting your group of consumers that you are able to sell to. But, by adopting this strategy, you can see how confident toddy is about their sales. So, my take is, they are doing more than enough sales from the US, and currently have no plan for expansion.

For those that have not used a toddy brewer before, the concept of producing coffee without hot water or stove must be very novel. This cold brew is attained by using time as a variable.

The very first step in doing this cold brew is to fill the brewing container with 1 pound of ground coffee. For a pound of coffee ground, you would need to pour 4 cups of cold water into the filter. And then you wait for at least 5 minutes.

After this 5 minutes, you add another 5 more cups of water into the filter. After this, you need to do more waiting, you would wait overnight, so you would place the container into the fridge.

This time round, you would need to wait for at least 12 hours. This is to allow the coffee to steep through the cold press filter. The liquid coffee will drain through the filter into the glass carafe.

Well, this is why I said earlier in the title about not buying the toddy coffee maker if you are someone that wants to brew your coffee. There is not much skill or technique involved in getting a toddy cold coffee, one does however, need to have lots of patience though.

Personally, I think this is a brewer that is easy to use and the cold coffee that results from it, is also pretty good. However, as cold coffee is the usual way of consuming this coffee (you can actually microwave the coffee concentrate to drink it hot), it would be more of a summer drink than a regular coffee brewer for most of us.

Therefore, for the majority of us, regardless if you like the cold brew or not, even if you do own toddy coffee brewer, it is very likely that you would also be getting a normal coffee maker as well.

The SLR, A Serious Camera

If you've been using a point and shoot and are considering taking the step up to an SLR (single lens reflex) camera, be prepared with some basic knowledge. First, you should understand what SLR means. Learn some basic tips on how to handle your new acquisition. It's a more complicated camera and is the camera of choice for serious minded photographers. The accessories for the SLR are also more elaborate than the point and shoot, including the camera bag you'll select.

What is an SLR? It's a single-lens reflex camera. It operates by using the same lens to view and take the picture. A mirror in the camera directs the light from the lens to a prism and then swings out of the way just in time for the shot to be taken. That's why your viewfinder goes black when you press the shutter release.

It may sound strange, but all cameras are not created equal when it comes to the best way to hold it when taking your shots. If you wanted, you could take a picture with your point and shoot by easily holding the camera with one hand. Not so with an SLR, it's a bigger and a bit heavier. Add to that the weight of a lens and battery pack and holding the camera steady will require both hands. You can always use a tripod, but it's not always convenient to carry one around the entire time you're out on a photo shoot.

Your right hand does the majority of the work involving the settings and actually taking the photos. The left hand is important in other ways. It operates the mode dial which is located on the top left of the camera. Also, very importantly it provides the support and helps steady the camera. Held properly, the lens should be resting on your left thumb and forefinger, so the left hand will also be operating the lens settings. Holding the camera in this way, gives you good balance and allows you to take all the pictures you want, without tiring. If you're carrying the right camera bag, such as a backpack, you'll be able to photograph all day long.

As a novice SLR owner, start out holding your camera in this manner. As you become more comfortable and experienced with your equipment, your may find yourself in situations that call for you to hold your camera with one hand. Hopefully, by that time you will have mastered the operation of your SLR and you'll be able to take the occasional shot successfully using one hand.

Now for the accessories for your SLR. You always want to make sure you have enough memory cards. There's nothing worse than being out taking pictures and run out of memory. Another necessary accessory is the tripod. Add a wide angle and a telephoto lens to your equipment and you've got a pretty complete beginners SLR camera system.

Now that you've got all the equipment you need to complete your camera system, the final, an very important accessory is your camera bag. What I like about the knife:

My knife came hair shaving sharp right out of the box, and continues to hold a very good edge. The good thing about 420 stainless steel is that it will be resistant to rust, but still stay sharp after repeated use.

2. The thermoplastic handle material gives you a really nice grip and will not be affected by rainy or muddy conditions. The thumb grooves directly before the spine of the blade give you a nice spot to apply pressure when making precise cuts.

3. The stainless steel pocket clip is replaceable if it ever breaks on you. This type of repair is covered under Buck's warranty.

4. Each Buck Bantam uses a lockback mechanism, which is regarded as one of the toughest lock styles in the knife industry. You wont need to worry about the knife closing on your fingers.

What I didn't like:

The knife is built like a tank, but I wish that they offered it with partial or full serrations. Other than that, the Buck Bantam is a steal for the money.
